Had a brief experience of American Airlines economy recently, on a short trip from Dallas to Florida. The Canadair Regional Jet was fine, but as is common with small planes like this, not a lot of headroom, not a lot of seat room, or anything else. Service was totally non-existant, with only dry crackers and a tiny tub of water being made available for the 2 hour flight.
Summary: Probably not representative.
Had only one experience, a Dallas to California return trip in a 737-800. Was actually surprisingly good, being served a warm meal, with choice of drinks. After United Domestic First being simply dry biscuits and water, this was a pleasant surprise. Seating was 2-2, bt of recline, not much leg room (which is what really matters to me), but certainly wasn't the worst way of crossing half the continent.
